Black History Month Smithsonian Poster Exhibit

This walk-through open exhibit highlights the 1968 City of Hope and The Poor People’s Campaign.

In 1964 President Johnson declared a war on poverty, however tens of millions of Americans were denied adequate wages, housing, and healthcare. Led by Dr. King and Ralph Abernathy, the campaign sought to demand social reform. Walk through the images captured during this time and learn how this grassroots, multiracial campaign occupied the National Mall over 40 days, where Dr. King delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech on Solidarity Day, attended by more than 50,000 people.
