Years in the making, now ready to be revealed.Over the past decade, Kristina Young collaborated with more than 2,000 community members to transform literal tons of broken household objects—donated after the 2014 earthquake and two devastating wildfires in 2017 and 2020—into a massive mosaic inspired by underground geological strata. Through a series of public workshops, residents helped assemble 406 individual mosaic panels that come together to form a 12-foot-high, 40-foot-long work of art.

“Each piece has a story,” said Young. “From a grandmother’s teacup to a child’s first sculpture, these fragments carry emotional weight. My goal has always been to give these beloved objects a second life.”

Designed to resemble underground geological strata, the mosaic has been permanently installed on a retired Napa Valley Wine Train car, generously donated and positioned along the Vine Trail in RAD. The mosaic-wrapped car resembles a colorful “core sample” from the earth, visible to passersby and cyclists.

The Quake Mosaic installation was funded by the Gasser Foundation and Chuck and Anne McMinn Foundation, with additional support from the Napa Valley Wine Train, Arts Council Napa Valley, Napa County, and hundreds of people from the community. The Rail Arts District Napa is the project’s fiscal sponsor, administering and supporting the project throughout the installation.

“It’s surreal to reach this moment on the 11th anniversary of the earthquake,” said Young. “The Quake Mosaic isn’t just a reflection of that day—it’s a monument to how we came together in the years that followed.”
