Sonoma Garden Park: A Family-Friendly Place to Explore in Sonoma

If you're looking for something a little different to do with kids in Sonoma, put Sonoma Garden Park on your list.

This 6.1-acre public garden in Sonoma is more than just a pretty place to walk around. It's a working garden, community gathering space and outdoor learning environment with gardens, a nature-based children's play area, seasonal markets and educational programs.

And for Napa families, it's an easy one to add to your list of places that are worth the drive.

The park is operated by Sonoma Ecology Center in partnership with the City of Sonoma and has become a community space where families can spend time outdoors, learn about gardening and agriculture, and simply let kids explore.

What Can Kids Do at Sonoma Garden Park?

One of the things we love about Sonoma Garden Park is that there isn't necessarily one thing you have to do there.

You can explore the gardens, stop by the children's play area, look for pollinators and wildlife, walk around the park or visit during one of the many programs and events held throughout the year.

🌱 Explore the Gardens

The park includes demonstration gardens designed to show how gardens can be beautiful while using less water and supporting healthy ecosystems.

The UC Master Gardeners of Sonoma County help maintain the Water-wise Demonstration Garden, and families can take a self-guided walk through the garden to see examples of drought-tolerant landscaping and other low-impact features.

It's a great way to get kids thinking about where food comes from and how gardens can support birds, bees, butterflies and other wildlife.

πŸ› Let Them Play

There's a Children's Play Area that's open to the public every day.

The nature-based playground gives kids a place to climb, balance and play while surrounded by the gardens and open space. The play area has been expanded with natural-material features including a climbing wall, slide, swings, bug springers, a four-person seesaw and a balancing bar.

So while the adults are admiring the gardens, the kids have somewhere to burn off some energy.

πŸ₯• Visit the Saturday Harvest Market

If you happen to visit on a Saturday, there's another reason to stop by.

The Harvest Market runs seasonally on Saturdays and offers produce and flowers grown at Sonoma Garden Park, along with eggs, local honey and olive oil.

It's a fun way to turn a visit to the garden into a little farmers-market outing, too.

And for kids, there's something satisfying about seeing the actual gardens where some of the food came from.

🌿 There's More Happening Here Than You Might Expect

Sonoma Garden Park also hosts workshops, volunteer days, community garden plots, educational programs and youth activities throughout the year.

The park is part of Sonoma Ecology Center's broader work connecting people with the natural world through education, stewardship and community.

There are even children's science programs held at the park, using the gardens and nature-based playground as a backdrop for hands-on exploration.

πŸ‚ Don't Miss the Annual Sonoma Harvest Festival

One of the biggest family events at Sonoma Garden Park happens once a year in the fall: Sonoma Ecology Center's annual Harvest Festival.

The free community festival brings the garden to life with local music, hands-on workshops, kid-friendly activities, farm games, local food and drinks, nature experiences and other activities for all ages.

We visited the 2026 Sonoma Harvest Festival, and it was one of those family days where we kept discovering something new around every corner.

What We Found at the Harvest Festival

🐝 Honeybees and honeycomb

🦎 Reptiles, including an iguana and snake

β˜€οΈ Solar viewing with the Robert Ferguson Observatory

🌿 Natural face painting

🍈 New fruits and garden produce to discover

πŸ› Plenty of room for kids to play

🍷 Local wine for the grown-ups

🎢 Live music

It was a pretty perfect combination: something interesting for the kids, something enjoyable for the adults and plenty of opportunities to learn about the natural world without it feeling like a lesson.

The Harvest Festival is held annually, so if you missed this year's event, keep an eye on Sonoma Ecology Center's event calendar for next year's date.

Is Sonoma Garden Park Worth the Drive From Napa?

We think so.

Sonoma Garden Park is the kind of place that doesn't require a big itinerary.

You can stop by for the Saturday Harvest Market, let the kids play, wander through the gardens or plan your visit around one of the park's workshops or special events.

And if you happen to be there during the annual Harvest Festival, even better.

It's one of those Sonoma spots that reminds us there are plenty of ways to have a great family day without spending a fortune or planning something elaborate.

Just bring the kids, let them explore and see what you discover.
